Innovation Procurement Plans

An important commitment in the Innovation Nation White Paper, (March 2008) was for each Government Department to publish an Innovation Procurement Plan (IPP) as part of its commercial strategy, setting out how Departments will embed innovation at the heart of procurement practices and will ensure that they engage with UK businesses at an early stage.

Most Departments have now published their IPPs, and these provide a good indication of the type of activities through which Departments are seeking to obtain innovative solutions. Links to all published Plans are available via this page.

The first iteration of Plans has been valuable in identifying the extent to which innovative procurement is already effectively incorporated into current practices. All Plans will be regularly reviewed and renewed to ensure that robust procedures and up to date information on innovation procurement are in place across Government.

BIS published its own IPP in December 2009, setting out how the Department and the bodies that it sponsors will drive innovation through procurement.
